The National Wool Declaration has replaced the Merino Dark and Medullated Fibre Risk Scheme to include additional information on mulesing status and chemical use. The declaration provides standardised information on mulesing practices, chemical use and dark and medulated fibre risk. Once a woolgrower has completed and signed the National Wool Declaration the contents are converted into recognised status codes for inclusion in the sale catalogue. While the declaration is voluntary, non-declared wools will be branded "ND" in the auction catalogue, indicating to buyers that dark and medulated fibre risk, mulesing status and chemical use are unknown and that there is some risk associated with these wools.

It is no longer necessary for owners to fill out the dark and medullated fibre section of the classers specification if they fill out and sign the National Wool Declaration.
